Derek Caudwell

Derek joined Horizon Energy as the Operations Manager in February 2011, and was promoted to the position of Asset Manager in May 2013. Derek was appointed as the General Manager Network in August 2014. Before joining Horizon Energy, Derek worked and lived overseas with a career spanning over 10 years in the Oil and Gas industry. During his career Derek has worked in operations, strategy, change management and financial management roles.

In his previous roles with Horizon Energy Derek has been responsible for a number of strategic initiatives in areas such as: smart-networks, major contract negotiations, quality of supply regulation, change management and customer service. Derek relishes the opportunity to lead the Network division and position the organisation to meet the regulatory and network requirements for Horizon Energy.

Derek currently holds an Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Canterbury, a Doctorate in Philosophy from Imperial College London including a US Patent, a Diploma in Financial Management from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and is an Associate Member of the Institute of Directors.

Jan Cronje

Jan joined Horizon Networks as the Operations Manager in April 2014. Before joining Horizon Networks, Jan worked as a consulting engineer for SKM in Auckland. Originally from South Africa, he worked at Eskom, a South African electricity public utility, for 7 years. He also owned and operated an electrical consulting business for ten years.

With a career spanning more than 20 years, Jan has been responsible for distribution and reticulation planning, electrical design for commercial buildings, substation design, project management and operations.

Jan relishes the opportunity be part of the Horizon Networks Operations team and being involved with all aspects of the electrical network and the diversity of staff interaction.

Colin Botha

Regional Manager Whakatane

Colin Botha

Colin joined Horizon Networks as a Network Engineer in February 2010, and was promoted to Service Delivery Manager in January 2011. In May 2017, Colin was appointed as the Regional Manager of Horizon Services in Whakatāne.

Before joining Horizon Networks, Colin lived and worked in Hawkes Bay for Unison Networks as their Design Team Leader looking after the Hawkes Bay, Taupo and Rotoroa regions. He emigrated from South Africa in 2005 where he was the District Manager for the Electricity Directorate for the city of Cape Town. 

Colin has more than 35 years’ experience in the electricity distribution industry.

He completed his apprenticeship as an Electrician working in a transformer and switchgear workshop as well a coal-fired power station. Colin was awarded a scholarship to study Electrical Engineering and holds a National Higher Diploma in Heavy Current Electrical Engineering.

Colin relishes the opportunity to work for Horizon and is enthusiastic to pass on his experience of the electrical distribution industry to others within the organisation. He is keen to improve staff culture, health and safety, as well as promote productivity and efficiency with his staff.

Graham Maunder

Graham Maunder

Graham joined Horizon Networks in April 2015 as External Infrastructure Supervisor. Immediately prior to returning to Horizon Networks, Graham spent a number of years with Nova Energy as Metering Asset Manager.

Graham served an electrical apprenticeship with Bay of Plenty Electric Power Board gaining full electrical registration in 1982. Subsequent roles have included Electrical Fitter, Electrical Technician, Electrical Services Supervisor and Metering Technician.

Graham also spent two years with Horizon Energy Distribution as Engineering Officer.

The current position is very rewarding and provides great satisfaction in providing prompt and efficient power solutions for external customers.

Russel Harris

External Business Manager

Russel Harris

Russel joined Horizon Networks as the Vegetation Manager in July 2016, and was promoted to External Business Manager in May 2017. Before joining Horizon Networks, Russel owned and operated his own successful business for 12 years.

With a career spanning 40 years in private contracting, Russel was responsible for a number of strategic initiatives which included transitioning the Dunedin City Council’s operational units from a typical Council department to a  business unit, and then into a fully-fledged private contracting company. The new contracting business of the Council covered such activities as roading, building and drainage, open space, and a large mechanical workshop. Russel moved to the Bay of Plenty to manage Excel Tauranga’s operational units, and also managed a large Rotorua-based company that specialised in activities like road marking and signs as well as vegetation control.

Russel’s experience include operations, strategy, growth, change management, tendering and pricing, financial management and reporting, introducing new software, contract negotiations and marketing.

Russel holds a number of qualifications which include: a Business Management diploma, is an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Management, National Certificate in Management, National Certificate in Senior Management and National Certificate in Horticulture, He is an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Management, a qualified Diesel Mechanic, qualified Trainer with Transit NZ and a NZ qualified Horticulture assessor.

Russel relishes the opportunity to work for Horizon Networks and is enthusiastic to drive the change with our external works.
