Introducing the Eastern Bay Energy Trust Electricity Supply Taster Course

This annual course is organised and co-funded by the Trust and Connexis (formerly the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation - ESITO), in conjunction with Tarawera High School. The course is held during the first week of the September/October school holidays and is live-in, with ten year 12 and year 13 students staying on the school marae and taking part in a variety of industry-related and team-building/personal development activities.

Applicants must:

  • Be a year 12 or year 13 student and live in the Whakatane, Kawerau or Opotiki District Council area, or Kaingaroa Village;
  • Be aged at least 16 years at the start of the course;
  • Have completed minimum of NCEA Level 1 and have good literacy and numeracy skills, and an interest in science and technology.
  • Have an interest in careers in the electricity supply industry.
  • Have a strong work ethic (demonstrated either at school or in employment).

Students are introduced to a number of work-related areas which could include:

  • How the New Zealand electricity supply industry works;
  • Practical activities such as electrical or mechanical workshop projects, making a simple generator, making extension leads, digging trenches, rope work;
  • Health and safety and the use of personal protection equipment;
  • Working at heights or abseiling or rock climbing;
  • A range of site visits to electricity supply companies.

All personal protection equipment including safety boots, overalls, hats and glasses will be provided and you get to keep the boots. Students are fully supervised at all times and all meals are provided. There is no cost to students.
